Lab Security Tightened;
Regents Cancel Meeting

Due to the impending U.S. war with Iraq, Berkeley Lab has moved from Security Condition (SECON) 3 to SECON 2 for the indeterminate future. That means more thorough vehicle scrutiny at entrance gates, and proof of purpose for visitors. Employees should be able to produce both parking passes and photo ID's on request. Visitors will have to log in, and delivery trucks with valid bills of lading will be fully searched before entering. For more information on security status, call the Lab's emergency number at 800-445-5830, or go to www.lbl.gov/ehs/securityupdate. In addition, this week's University of California Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco, which was to include an annual report on the DOE national labs, has been cancelled as a security precaution.

Laboratory Leaders Invite
Employees to Dialogues

The first in a series of "brown bag" employee dialogues with top Laboratory managers has been scheduled for next Tuesday, March 25, at 11:30 a.m. in Perseverance Hall. Lab Director Charles Shank and Deputy Directors Sally Benson and Pier Oddone are scheduled to talk briefly about issues and initiatives and answer questions. Employees are invited to bring their lunch and their interest in learning more about lab challenges, opportunities and programs.

Road closed image
Road Closure

One-lane traffic control is in effect today on Lawrence Road near Building 48 (the fire station) from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then, Wednesday through Friday, Lawrence Road will be closed from Glaser Road eastward to the Building 31 driveway, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this time, Glaser road will be open to two-way traffic to allow access to and from Building 31 and the East Canyon. This will affect parking at Building 77 along the guardrail and the downhill portion of the road. These traffic restrictions are necessary to install a new water main along Lawrence Road as part of the Sitewide Water Project. For more information, call Sam Birky at 7932.

Helicopter Will Hover
For Aerial Photography

Image of a helicopter
Berkeley Lab will document current site conditions by photographing from a helicopter for about 2-3 hours at mid-day. When the weather is right, perhaps one day this week, the ‘copter will make several passes over the lab. Photos will document things like vegetation status and management controls. Questions about the fly-over should be directed to the Community Relations Office at 7292.
