Gray
Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank has announced the appointment of Dr. Joe W. Gray, a distinguished faculty member in Laboratory Medicine and Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, to be the Lab’s Associate Director – Biosciences and Division Director for Life Sciences. Shank cited Gray’s "innovative, world-leading biology" in his announcement to division staff on Friday. He will succeed Interim Director Priscilla Cooper, who will return to full-time research. A complete story on Gray, who has been affiliated with Berkeley Lab since 1992, will appear in next Friday’s edition of Currents.

Ex-Engineering Employee
Cynthia Fike Dies

Former Engineering Division employee Cynthia Fike passed away last Tuesday. She worked in the Division's travel office before transferring to the Accelerator Fusion Research Division in 1997. She left the lab in 2000 to be a full-time mom. She is survived by her three children and her husband Tony Atases, who is a mechanical technician in the Engineering Division's Design and Fabrication Department. Funeral services will be held in Oakland at St. Mary's Cemetary this Friday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Alameda Little League officials have organized a trust fund for their children. To contribute, please send checks to: Bank of Alameda, Atases Education Fund, Attn: Melinda Viascan, 2130 Otis Drive, Alameda 94501. Send donations and cards to Rita McLean, MS 46A-1123, x7506.

Hotel Test
Will Focus
On Lighting
in Bathrooms

Berkeley Lab researchers are studying the savings of a new energy-efficient lighting control system to be installed at a DoubleTree Hotel in Sacramento, under an agreement signed by the Lab, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, DoubleTree Hotels, and The Watt Stopper, Inc. The system was developed based on research performed by Berkeley Lab scientists on improving hotel room energy efficiency. The demonstration will "re-light" the entire Sacramento facility, which has more than 400 rooms, with a new control system for bathroom lighting. Full story.
