ALS Presents Long-Range Vision To DOE

How will the ALS look 20 years from now? The current vision, as presented to DOE, involves a light source cluster comprising an upgraded ALS, a Coherent Infrared Center (CIRCE), and a Linac-Based Ultrafast X-Ray Source (LUX). The cases for these developments were made last month to a subcommittee of DOE’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Advisory Committee that has been charged with reviewing proposals for major new facilities at BES-sponsored laboratories. Gene Schultz Wins Award For British Journal

Gene Schultz, a member of the Computer Protection Program, also serves as editor-in-chief of the journal "Computers and Security," based in England. The journal has just been recognized with a 2003 Golden Page Award for "Originality in Information Management and Technology." The award comes from an independent accreditation board that reviews papers published in nominated journals. Schultz has been invited to attend the April 24 awards ceremony just outside of London.

Stanley Construction
Will Affect Traffic

Construction on the Berkeley campus replacement building for Stanley Hall will impact vehicle and pedestrian traffic next week, especially around Donner Lab. Perimeter site fencing will be installed Monday through Wednesday, after which East Mining Circle Road will be closed to all traffic. Access to Donner will be via West Mining Circle Road in front of Evans Hall. Demolition preparations will also begin on Wednesday.

New 'Update' Gives
UC View of Hearings

The latest edition of LabUpdate, a newsletter from the University of California’s Office of the President, offers the University’s perspectives on hearings this week on the Los Alamos issue in Sacramento and Washington. The publication’s third installment also includes an item on the latest upgrade of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center’s IBM supercomputer to 10 teraflops.
