A
new cooperative ergonomics R&D initiative has been
launched at Berkeley Lab to create a novel arm support
system to enhance musculoskeletal comfort during sitting
tasks at the computer or standing at a bench top. The
aim is to reduce the likelihood of cumulative trauma
injuries to the upper extremities. This initiative was
developed jointly by Jeffrey Chung (EH&S)
and Michael Siminovitch (EETD), with cooperation
from Steve Dellinges and Robin Lafever
in the Engineering Divisions DesignWorks. Seed
money for the initial concept came from EH&S Division
Director David McGraw. Phase two will include field
testing at the Lab.

Dark
stars, the dark age, dark matter, and dark energy are
the major components of the dark side of the universe:
96% of the universe consists of mass and energy we can't
see and don't really understand. Fortunately, the badly
outnumbered 4% of luminous matter feels the dark side
through gravity and other forces. Stellar struggles with
the dark side, which we can see through gravity and electromagnetic
emissions, have much to tell us about the bulk of the
universe. Six featured stories in the lastest issue of
Science probe this mystery and how it will be solved,
including the use of SNAP, Berkeley Labs supernova-searching
satellite project.

Sextro of Berkeley Labs Environmental
Energy Technologies Division is among the nearly150
scientists, engineers, and student assistants
who are involved in an atmospheric dispersion
study this month in Oklahoma City, OK. Sponsored
by the Department of Energy, the Department of
Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Defense
Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the study
will track the air movement of safe, non-toxic
tracer gases in and around city buildings. This
will aid scientists in better understanding how
chemical and biological agents are spread. Sextro
will be involved in the indoor air analysis.
