The California Historical Society has unveiled the tricksters behind one of California's greatest hoaxes: a brass plate supposedly left by Sir Francis Drake after he made landfall in the 16th century. The announcement, made yesterday, finally solves a case opened in 1977, when Berkeley Lab's Frank Asaro and Helen Michel used neutron activation analysis to determine the brass plate was manufactured no earlier than the first half of the nineteenth century. Dr. Leonard K. Peters, the Vice Provost for Research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, will become Director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on April 1. Dr. Peters succeeds Dr. Lura J. Powell, who served from April 2000 to December 2002. Full Story.

Chances are that the brawny SUV would hold up better in a wreck....But Marc Ross of the University of Michigan, co-author of the study with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scientist Thomas Wenzel, contends that a hard look at the data indicates otherwise.
