The
California Historical Society has unveiled the tricksters behind one
of California's greatest hoaxes: a brass plate supposedly left by
Sir Francis Drake after he made landfall in the 16th century. The
announcement, made yesterday, finally solves a case opened in 1977,
when Berkeley Lab's Frank Asaro and Helen Michel used
neutron activation analysis to determine the brass plate was manufactured
no earlier than the first half of the nineteenth century. Full
