Bush
Administration's R&D Priorities for FY 2005
In
recent presentations to the High Energy Physics Advisory
Panel and the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee,
Patrick Looney, the Office of Science and Technology Policy
(OSTP) Assistant Director for Physical Sciences and Engineering,
described attempts within the Administration to take a
broad view of the entire federal science portfolio. He
quoted from a recent memorandum issued by OSTP Director
John Marburger, which outlines several research initiatives
that should "receive particular attention,"
including nanotechnology, a molecular level understanding
of life processes, and environment and energy initiatives
such as climate change. A synopsis of the memo can be
read here. |

Mountain
Lion Sighting
This
past weekend there was a reported sighting of
a mountain lion on the Laboratory property. The
sighting occurred when the Lab was generally quiet
and unoccupied at 3:15 a.m. Sunday. There have
been no other sightings in the past two years,
and it is not known if this lion will remain in
the area. A few years ago, we had weekly reports
of sightings, and a mountain lion may be active
in our general area once again. All local sightings
have ended with the lion withdrawing quickly after
it was observed. Although it is extremely unlikely
that you will see or encounter a mountain lion
and the few sightings in this area have all ended
with the mountain lion withdrawing almost immediately,
you may wish to look at the suggestions
provided by the California Department of Fish
and Game.

Lab's
Heat Island Group
Hosts Roofing Workshop
Eight
students from commercial testing labs and the
roofing materials industry attended a workshop
on August 8th to learn how to test the solar reflectance
of roofing materials. The workshop was taught
by Berkeley Labs Heat Island Group and the
Cool Roof Rating Council, a new industry organization
that has formed to oversee the testing and certification
of roofing products for their ability to reflect
solar radiation. Berkeley Lab researchers have
demonstrated that more reflective roofs reduce
air conditioning loads, save energy, and help
reduce the urban heat island, with the secondary
effect of decreasing smog episodes. Here, Hashem
Akbari, leader of the Heat Island Group, (second
from left), demonstrates how to take a solar reflectivity
measurement with a pyranometer. |
