Blaster Worm Infects Lab Computers Through Unprotected Laptop

Despite the best efforts of the Lab’s Computer Protection Program, the notorious Blaster Worm has found its way into Lab computers. The worm, which affects only Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows software to spread from one system to another. Although security measures had been taken to block the worm at the Lab’s Perimeter, it is believed an infected laptop, brought on site and connected to the internet, began scanning and infecting other computers. To date 76 machines have been infected, with hundreds more vulnerable. The worm operates completely independent of email, and requires practically no mistake to be made by the user. Windows users who have not yet done so should immediately download and install the MS Blaster patch available here. If you believe your machine has been infected--an infected machine will begin to run badly, display error messages and even crash--go here to obtain the MS Blaster Removal Tool, then install the patch appropriate to your operating system. Employees are warned not to bring any laptops into the Lab that do not have up-to-date patches and antivirus software. Free antivirus software is available for your home computer here.

Interactions.org Launches
Particle Physics Website

The worldwide particle physics community yesterday launched Interactions.org, a new global, web-based resource developed to provide news, high-quality video, imagery and other tools for communicating the science of particle physics. "Interactions.org will give the media, the science community, policy makers, funding agencies, students, and teachers the tools to better understand and communicate the nature and value of particle physics research and its connections to other fields of science," said Judy Jackson, Public Affairs director at Fermilab. The Web site, found at www.interactions.org, also presents timely information about science policy funding, links to universities, a glossary, and a conference calendar. Berkeley Lab is a Contributing Member.

Free Trial of Knovel
Science Database

Lab employees have the opportunity to try out, during a free trial period, a new online service called Knovel, a web-based source of top technical reference books and databases from over 30 major publishers. All content in the Knovel service is full text, searchable, and enhanced with productivity tools like interactive tables, calculation packages and graphing and equation plotters. A web interface helps users find and verify information faster than traditional research methods. Knovel’s features include: premium content from the world’s leading science and technical publishers, keyword and advanced searching, and interactive "hands on" tools. The free trial period is now through August 17. Knovel services can be accessed at www.knovel.com.

Focus Groups To Review
Benefits Communications

This is a reminder that focus groups will be forming at each University of California campus and the three DOE laboratories to review UC’s Human Resources and Benefits printed communication materials and the At Your Service Website. Berkeley Lab’s Benefits Office is seeking 15 to 20 volunteers to individually review the materials and to share their opinions, suggestions and recommendations with UC’s Office of the President. Most of the review will occur via e-mail, but conference call(s) and at least one "in-person" meeting also may be involved. Interested participants should e-mail Stacy Greene at [email protected] by Friday, Aug. 15.
