The three University of California-managed
laboratories have reached an agreement to consolidate and implement
a single list of “sensitive” items to be introduced
across the system, beginning in the new fiscal year October 1. This
new approach results in part from recommendations following the
recent Inspector General’s (IG) audit of the laboratories.
Up to this point, Berkeley Lab’s lone “sensitive”
asset has been the personal computer. The IG recommended that digital
cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other assets be
considered. The three laboratories worked together to define the
specific assets and the dollar threshold.
All the items listed below must have at least an acquisition value
of $300 or more to be added to the list, except for PDAs or other
organizers with computer connectivity, which will be identified
as sensitive regardless of their acquisition value. The following
assets will be on the expanded “sensitive” item list:
- Cameras – Digital, still, TV, movie and video
- Computers – Desktops, Laptops, Notebooks, Servers, and
Workstations
- PDAs and other computer-linked organizers
- Printers, Laser, Inkjet style, and Multifunctional Scanners
– Computer
- Portable Video projectors
- Radios – Two-way
- Recorders – CD, DVD, dictation, and video
- Telephones – Cellular and mobile
- Scanners for computers
Assets purchased prior to October 1, even if their acquisition
value was greater than $300, will neither be identified nor tracked
as sensitive. Suggestions or comments should be sent to Gavin Robillard
