Lifts Computer's Status

"One
of the greatest ironies of the information technology
revolution is that while the computer was conceived
and born in the field of pure mathematics . . . until
recently this marvelous technology had only a minor
impact within the field that gave it birth." So
begins Experimentation in Mathematics, a book
by Berkeley Lab's David H. Bailey and Jonathan
M. Borwein due out in September. The book documents
how computers, once looked on by mathematical researchers
with disdain as mere calculators, have gained enough
power to enable an entirely new means to achieve fundamental
discoveries. More.

Reminder
to Check
Assets In Your Name
Property
listed in Berkeley Lab's inventory database assigns custodial
responsibility to individuals who either acquired or use it.
There's a quick and easy way to check the information in the
database to ensure that the delegation of responsibility,
and the asset, are accurate. For simple instructions, go

Nanowire
Comb Emits
in the UV
By Jacqueline Hewett
Scientists
have fabricated an ultraviolet laser array from zinc-oxide
nanowires. The team from Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory say its comb-shaped structure may find
uses in nanometer electromechanical systems (NEMS)
"In general each comb structure has more than
10 nanowires branches in parallel," lead researcher
Peidong Yang told Optics.org. "The largest
structure we can grow has 50 nanowire branches."
