I encourage you to join the campus
community in volunteering for Rebuilding Together Weekend Saturday
or Sunday, April 26-27, 2003.
Rebuilding Together, formerly Christmas in April, is a national
volunteer organization that provides free repairs for community
facilities and low-income seniors and people with disabilities so
that they may continue to live independently in a safe environment.
UC Berkeley is a sponsor of Berkeley-Albany-Emeryville Rebuilding
Together.
Cal volunteers have helped build wheelchair ramps; install grab
bars and handrails; and repair leaking roofs, inadequate heat and
plumbing, and crumbling stairs. They have painted, removed fire
hazards and planted flowers. To these Berkeley residents, UC is
more than an institution; it is a good neighbor and friend.
Three sites will proudly display a Cal banner this year: Two Berkeley
homes and, in partnership with the city of Berkeley, Willard Middle
School. For Willard School and one home, the workday will be Saturday,
April 26th. The second home will have its main workday on Sunday,
April 27th. On request, Rebuilding Together will assign groups to
the same site.
The work day is 8:30 am-3/4:00 pm. Volunteers receive a Rebuilding
Together T-shirt and are invited with their families to attend the
Volunteer Recognition picnic in Live Oak Park after the workday.
