If so-called "green collar" jobs will lead California out of its economic downturn, students at two East Bay high schools will be well prepared to ride the wave. Some of them will be the first graduates of "Green Academies," three-year programs in high schools around the state to prepare students for the green economy. The Lab is partnering with Oakland Technical High School and El Cerrito High School, and beginning this fall, students and their teachers will be able to take lab tours, hear talks by Lab scientists and engineers and eventually, some will have eight-week summer internships in an actual laboratory. This year there are two vaccines being prepared to combat influenza viruses. The normal seasonal flu vaccine, active against three variants of the common virus, will be available in the community, through UC covered healthcare providers, or at one of four clinics sponsored by the Lab's Health Services Department. The other vaccine, for the novel H1N1 virus, is not yet available, but its administration will be prioritized based on five groups. The Lab will apply for a vaccine allotment, but is not expected to receive priority for the vaccine. Special Event: Earth Sciences Hosts TOUGH Symposium This Week A symposium on the applications and enhancements of the TOUGH numerical simulator — a suite of computer programs for the simulation of multiphase fluid and heat flows in porous and fractured media — will be held through tomorrow. Sponsored by the Earth Sciences Division, the symposium will include oral and poster presentations in the Building 66 Auditorium and a banquet dinner. More>
Three physics engineering majors from Southern Arkansas University spent the bulk of their summer working, but these students were not waiting tables to earn extra cash for the fall semester. They were constructing a cosmic radiation detector at Berkeley Lab — the same lab associated with 11 Nobel Prize Laureates in physics. With mentor Azriel Goldschmidt of the Nuclear Sciences Division, the students spent 10 weeks preparing for and constructing two cosmic radiation detectors, which enable detection of high-energy gamma rays and muon particles. Lab employees who want to book rooms in the new Guest House, scheduled to open on Oct. 1, can do so now by sending e-mail here. Reservations will eventually be made online, once the Guest House website is up and running. The facility offers 57 rooms and plenty of amenities. An opening ceremony is scheduled for next Monday (Sept. 21) at 4 p.m., with tours offered every half hour from 1 to 4 p.m. that day.
This month you will see a new look to your paycheck statement. The Payroll Department has implemented a new pay advice statement that includes additional helpful information, such as your monthly/hourly pay rate, job classification, and division. Financial information is presented in a new format that is much easier to read and understand. Go here to view the new format.
