Summer Lectures, Materials Sciences ‘Conversation'

Several videos have recently been posted to the Lab's YouTube site and are available for viewing. The videos include the entire Summer Lecture series, which includes talks on personalized cancer treatment by Joe Gray, carbon sequestration by Curtis Oldenburg, gravitational lensing by Alexie Leauthaud and Reiko Nakajima, and ultrafast science by Bob Schoenlein. Also available is a videotaped conversation between the Molecular Foundry's Alice Egan and imaging researcher Jim Schuck. All these talks were presented for lay audiences.

People: Engineering Division Director Goes Underground

robinsonBerkeley Lab Engineering Division Director Kem Robinson has gone underground — deep underground. Interim Laboratory Director Paul Alivisatos and UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Research Graham Fleming have asked Robinson to serve as the acting Project Director for Design and Construction of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) through January 2010. DUSEL, a National Science Foundation project, is developing a national multipurpose underground laboratory in the former Homestake Mine in South Dakota. Robinson is taking a leave of absence as Engineering Division Director and Peter Denes has been named Acting Engineering Division Director (see article below). Robinson joins Kevin Lesko, a senior scientist in the Nuclear Science Division, who is the principal investigator for DUSEL. More>

denesPeople: Peter Denes Appointed Acting Division Director for Engineering

Peter Denes, a senior scientist at Berkeley Lab, has been named Acting Director for the Engineering Division by Interim Laboratory Director Paul Alivisatos. Denes steps in for Kem Robinson, who has agreed to serve as the Acting Project Director for Design and Construction of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory Project, or DUSEL (see article above). durbinSpecial Event: Memorial Celebration for Patricia Durbin on Saturday

A memorial celebration for Patricia Durbin, a longtime Lab researcher with the Chemical Sciences Division, who passed away on March 5, will be held this Saturday at 11 a.m. in Tilden Park's Brazilian Room (Berkeley). Guests are invited to bring photos and memories to share. Those who plan to attend can RSVP by sending e-mail here, or calling x5587.

floodEH&S: Onsite Workshops on Emergency Preparedness; First is Tomorrow

Staff who want to learn simple emergency response skills for home, work, and travel are invited to attend one of three lectures by emergency preparedness expert Ana-Marie Jones. She will present a diverse, interactive curriculum designed to empower participants and make preparedness beneficial and fun. The hour-long talks take place tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 24, at noon, and Wednesday, Sept. 9, at noon, all in the Building 66 Auditorium.

dancingEmployee Activity: Dance Sessions Resume Week of August 24

The weekly lesson, practice, and exercise sessions hosted by the Lab's Dance Club are on summer recess and will resume the week of August 24. Lessons on the foxtrot will continue on Monday, August 24, with practice on Wednesday. A new series on samba will begin soon. Dance exercise classes are offered on Thursdays, with a series on hip-hop scheduled for early September. All sessions are free and begin at noon in Building 76-235 (recreation room).
