Prestigious Lab Advisory
Board Sets First Meeting

A group of 10 distinguished scientists and administrators, which includes Nobel and national-prize winners and university chancellors, has agreed to serve as Berkeley Lab's Advisory Board under the new University of California management contract. They will assemble for their first meeting at the Lab Friday and Saturday. Lab Director Steve Chu and co-chair Bruce Darling, UC Senior Vice President of University Affairs, will host the sessions, which are designed to orient the advisors on the Lab and UC vision and goals, its priority initiatives, and its challenges. Go here for more information on the board, including membership.

Lab Group Signs
Microgrid MOU

American Electric Power and Berkeley Lab's Consortium for Electric Reliability Technology Solutions (CERTS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work cooperatively to research, develop, and demonstrate distributed energy resource microgrids. The CERTS Microgrid concept is an advanced approach for enabling the integration, in principle, of an unlimited quantity of distributed energy resources (for example small solar, wind, fuel cells, and hydropower sources) into the electricity grid.

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH

Fuss with fifth grade students

Life Scientist, Veggie
Car Visit Local School

Jill Fuss, a postdoctoral fellow in the Lab's Life Sciences Division, drives a Volkswagon Jetta that looks like most others, but it runs on vegetable oil. The vehicle not only helps Fuss save money on gas, she also uses it as a teaching tool. Fuss volunteers for "TechBridge," an after-school program sponsored by the Chabot Space and Science Center that helps girls get interested in science. Fuss recently showed her car to fifth graders at Oakland's Lincoln Elementary to teach them about fuel alternatives. The program is looking for female scientist volunteers. Those interested can contact Linda Kekelis.

Director's Brown Bag
Opens Staff Dialogue

Have a question for Lab Director Steve Chu or Chief Operations Officer David McGraw? If so, they would be pleased to have a discussion about any and all subjects affecting the Laboratory. Their next Brown Bag forum with all interested employees is scheduled for tomorrow at noon in the Building 2-100 Conference Room. Bring a lunch and an interest in sharing ideas with laboratory management.

CDF measurement of Bs oscillations

CDF Results Show Bs
Mesons Often Change

Fermilab is reporting results from the CDF collaboration in measuring the rate at which the subatomic particle known as a Bs meson oscillates back and forth between matter and antimatter. The Bs meson is made up of a bottom quark (B) bound to a strange antiquark (s). It was known to transition between matter and antimatter but precise frequency measurements were unavailable.   After analyzing tens of trillions of proton-antiproton collisions over the past four years, CDF has announced an oscillation rate of nearly 3 trillion times per second. "These results help make predictions of the size of the matter-antimatter asymmetry much more precise," said Marjorie Shapiro, leader of the CDF group at Berkeley Lab. Full story.

PEOPLE

Long Career of AFRD
Employee Celebrated

Lambertson
A dinner is being held to honor the distinguished career and 80th birthday of Glen Lambertson, a longtime employee of the Lab's Accelerator and Fusion Research Division. The event takes place May 26 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Lambertson has made seminal contributions in many areas of experimental and theoretical accelerator physics and was a major force behind the success of the Bevatron, say colleagues. Go here to RSVP for the dinner.
