Distinguished Panel Will Serve as Berkeley Lab Advisory Board

The Berkeley Lab Advisory Board, mandated in the latest University of California management contract, will hold its first meeting on Friday and Saturday. Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu and Board co-chairman Bruce Darling, Senior Vice President of University Affairs for the Office of the President, will host the sessions.

The Advisory Board, which reports to University of California President Robert Dynes, will meet twice a year. It will play an important role in the ongoing assessment of the Laboratory's fulfillment of contractual obligations and its strategic direction.

Among those scheduled to address the Board are Associate Laboratory Director Paul Alivisatos, who will discuss Helios, the Lab's solar-to-chemical energy research initiative ; Associate Laboratory Director Horst Simon, speaking on the future of computational science; Deputy Director Graham Fleming on campus-lab collaborations; and of Chief Operating Officer David McGraw Molecular Foundry Director Carolyn Bertozzi, will lead a tour of the Lab's newest national user facility;

The Advisory Board includes the following prestigious scientists and industry leaders:

•  Bruce Darling, Senior Vice President, University of California (co-chair)

•  Bruce Alberts, Dept of Biochemistry and Biophysics, UCSF; former President, National Academy of Sciences

•  Norman Augustine, Chairman and CEO Emeritus, Lockheed Martin, and member of the National Academy of Sciences committee on "Rising Above the Gathering Storm"

•  David Auston, President, Kavli Foundation, former President of Case Western Reserve University

•  Robert Birgeneau, Chancellor, and Professor of Physics, UC Berkeley

•  William Brinkman, Senior Research Physicist, Princeton University; (retired)   Vice-President for Research, Bell Labs

•  France A. Cordova, Chancellor, UC Riverside, and Professor of Physics

•  Homer Neal, Samuel Goudsmit Professor of Physics, University of Michigan and head of the US ATLAS team

•  Burton Richter, Director Emeritus of Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and 1976 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics

•  Lucy Shapiro, Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Professor of Cancer Research and Director of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic MedicineStanford University
