Town Hall Meetings on Scientist/Engineer Job Classifications

From Director Chu:

Over a year ago, Deputy Director Graham Fleming and I commissioned an advisory committee, the Scientific Advancement Committee (SAC), to review our current practices and recommend changes regarding the hire and promotion of professional research staff (Scientists/Engineers) at the Laboratory.

Graham and I extend our sincere thanks to Natalie Roe, Physics Division Senior Scientist, for chairing the committee and to all the SAC members for their hard work and thoughtful recommendations.

The committee membership included representation from the following scientific divisions and Office of Workforce Diversity:

Natalie Roe, Chair (Physics)
Mark Alper (Materials Sciences)
William Barletta and Christine Celata (Accelerator & Fusion Research)
John Bell (Computing Sciences)
Heinz Frei (Physical Biosciences)
Joe Gray (Life Sciences)
Don Grether (Environmental Energy Technologies)
Dan Neumark (Chemical Sciences)
Harry Reed (Workforce Diversity)
Neville Smith* (Advanced Light Source)
Yvonne Tsang (Earth Sciences)

After Graham’s and my careful and considerate review, we are now ready to hear your comments on the committee’s recommendations.

The recommendations include:

  1. A consistent standardized process for hiring and promoting Scientists/Engineers into career positions.

  2. A career-track promotional path for Scientist/Engineer appointments similar to the academic model.

You are invited to attend one of two Town Hall meetings hosted by Graham Fleming and Natalie Roe to learn more about these recommendations.  The meetings are scheduled in the 50 Auditorium, and via simulcast in the 66 Auditorium, on Wednesday, March 7 at 3 p.m. and Thursday, March 22 at 2 p.m.  Please join Graham and Natalie at one of these two important meetings.

-- Steve Chu, Berkeley Lab Director
