FY 2007 Wall-to-Wall Inventory

During Phase One, the first two weeks in January, inventory takers will fan out across the Lab and scan assets by area, regardless of division steward. This approach is expected to be more time/effort efficient and should yield validation of a very high percentage of all assets.

Phase Two will be centered in the divisions and will require both property representatives and researcher/custodians to team up and locate the harder-to find assets.

A special webpage dedicated to inventory activities will include key contacts, guidance, a FAQ page, issue log and weekly status reports once the inventory begins.

Inventory manager Dave McFann reminds all employees that the inventory is a team effort and there are a number of things to keep in mind as the wall-to-wall inventory begins:

  • Safety First—Everyone must observe safety rules and be especially observant in unfamiliar areas.
  • Quick Response—Division Property Personnel will be counting on employees for access to restricted or hard-to-get-into areas.
  • Due Diligence—Employees who have barcode-numbered property offsite may bring it in to the lab for validation or arrange to borrow a scanner to capture the asset in locis. Exceptions to scanning may be granted by the inventory manager if special circumstances warrant.
  • Remote Validation—Laboratory property on loan or furnished under contract to an external organization will require validation by both affidavit and date-stamped digital photographs of the barcode and the asset.

At the conclusion of the inventory, DOE and UC representatives will conduct an independent validation of a selected sample in order to confirm the integrity of the effort.

Employees’ first line of assistance are their Division Property Representatives. The Core Property Group staff are available for questions and guidance as well.
