Responsible Waste Management Begins in the Laboratory

Berkeley Lab is committed to responsible and compliant management of all wastes - hazardous, radioactive, mixed wastes, and sanitary trash. Proper management of wastes is the responsibility of all Berkeley Lab waste generators and their line management. During the on-going laboratory safety review and cleanout effort, it is important that all researchers and staff follow the proper disposal procedures for salvage and waste items. Don't forget even items like WD-40 or epoxy must be properly disposed.

Follow these guidelines for waste disposal:

1) Store all hazardous, radioactive and mixed wastes properly. Place them in the appropriate storage area until waste pickup.

2) Segregate all non-hazardous waste items from those that are hazardous. If you are unsure, contact your WM Generator Assistant.

3) Be sure that items from RMAs are properly surveyed for release. For additional clarification of radiological survey requirements, contact Chris Donahue (x7736) or Bob Fairchild (x2278).

4) It is especially important that items placed in recycling bins are permitted per the restrictions marked on each bin.

5) All hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes must always be managed through the EHS Waste Management Group's Hazardous Waste Handling Facility to ensure all regulatory requirements for tracking, storage, and appropriate treatment and disposal are followed. More information can be found in Pub 3000, chapter 20.
