John Magee’s Research at Berkeley Lab
By Aloke Chatterjee

Professor Magee was a theoretical radiation chemist and he was well known as the "Father of Radiation Chemistry.” His main contribution to our collaborative research centered on the understanding of radiolysis of water associated with energetic heavy charged particles and their applications in radiation biology. He demonstrated that the yields of water radicals diminish as the atomic numbers of the charged particles increase and also as the particle slows down in a medium through electronic interactions. He made a pioneering contribution by elucidating mechanisms related to the induction of damage to DNA by energetic heavy charged particles. Many of his predictions based on theoretical calculations were validated by experimental data obtained at the BEVALAC.
