Paul Alivisatos to Step Down as Director of Molecular Foundry

Search is Launched

I have received the following note from Paul Alivisatos:

"After a great deal of thought, I have decided to relinquish my role as Director of the Molecular Foundry. I do this reluctantly because this is a very exciting new venture which presents us with a great opportunity to make a significant impact on this new field. My responsibilities have grown to include Materials Science Division Director and Associate Lab Director for Physical Sciences. In this critical stage of development, the Molecular Foundry needs a full time Director.

I have truly enjoyed helping to establish the Foundry and look forward to continuing my participation as Director of its Inorganic Nanostructures Facility. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Facility Directors and our first group of scientists who have been a great help in initiating the program. In addition, I offer my thanks to the construction group which has managed the project to provide us with our new building. I have complete confidence in the Foundry staff and in our ability to find a new Director to preside at "Opening Day" this December, and lead the Foundry into the future."

Berkeley Lab and the entire scientific community have benefitted from Paul's extraordinary vision and outstanding leadership of the Foundry. He is playing a a key role for the entire Laboratory through his service as Division Director and Associate Laboratory Director.

I accept Paul's resignation as Molecular Foundry Director knowing that he will continue to be closely involved with the facility, which will remain as part of the Materials Sciences Division. A search committee headed by Janos Kirz will begin its work immediately.
