Division Director Phyllis Pei of Environment, Health and Safety has appointed two new members of her management team -- Eugene Lau as Division Deputy and Richard DeBusk as Occupational Safety Group Leader. Lau served as Director of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of California, San Francisco, for five years prior to his Lab appointment. Before that, he was manager of the clinical program in the EH&S office at UCSF to support the UCSF Medical Center, as well as senior industrial hygienist. Earlier experience was gained in the State of California's Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) office, with the Environmental Protection Agency, with the Department of Public Health in San Francisco, and in private industry. Lau is certified as an industrial hygienist, safety professional, hazardous materials manager, and environmental health specialist. DeBusk came to Berkeley Lab from the firm CH2M HILL in Richland, WA, for whom he spent five years as Industrial Safety Program Manager. It was one of four U.S. Department of Energy prime contractors for which he provided safety and emergency services management - others were Fluor Hanford in Richland, Westinghouse at Savannah River, SC, and Westinghouse Materials Company in Fernald, OH. DeBusk, who is a certified safety professional, is responsible for the industrial safety and accident prevention programs at the lab, ensuring compliance with OSHA and DOE requirements.
