LBNL Senior Management Team

I am pleased to announce three new appointments to the senior management team of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Graham R. Fleming has been appointed as the Laboratory’s new Deputy Director, succeeding Piermaria J. Oddone, who has served as LBNL Deputy Director since 1990. Fleming’s appointment will be effective this spring, when Oddone departs to become the fifth Fermilab Director beginning July 1.

Graham will become the Laboratory’s only Deputy Director, and he will be working closely with me on scientific policy and program development, as well as on more fully integrating operations and administration activities with the scientific programs. Graham will play a critically important role in the Laboratory’s new organization, and I am delighted that someone of his extraordinary talents and ability has agreed to accept it.

A distinguished researcher, teacher and administrator both here and on campus since 1997, he is a world leader in the field of time-resolved spectroscopy. His service as Co-Director of the Institute for Bioengineering, Biotechnology, and Quantitative Biomedicine (QB3), and as the faculty lead and advisor to the Chancellor on the Stanley Hall replacement building, are invaluable assets in advancing Laboratory partnerships with UC Berkeley.

The search for Graham’s successor as Director of the Physical Biosciences Division will begin immediately. Members of the search committee will be announced separately.

When Graham begins as Deputy Director, A. Paul Alivisatos will become the new Associate Laboratory Director—Physical Sciences. Paul has served as Materials Sciences Division Director since January 2003 and will continue in this role. As ALD—Physical Sciences, Paul will have oversight and coordination responsibilities for the following divisions: Advanced Light Source, Chemical Sciences, Environmental Energy Technologies, Physical Biosciences; and Materials Sciences.

Paul is recognized internationally as one of the “fathers” of nanoscience. He joined the Laboratory staff in 1991, and he has been instrumental in developing the concept and program for the Molecular Foundry. His distinguished record, which includes membership in the National Academy of Sciences, will be of great benefit to the Laboratory as we chart our ambitious course in these fields.

Paul will join the three other current scientific Associate Laboratory Directors: Joe Gray, Biosciences; James Siegrist, General Sciences; and Horst Simon, Computing.

I have appointed David C. McGraw as Associate Laboratory Director for Operations, retroactive to January 1, 2005. David is now the Laboratory’s senior manager with overall responsibility for the Facilities Division and the Environment, Health and Safety Division, including the Departments of Occupational Medicine and Workers' Compensation, Physical Safeguards and Security, Emergency Preparedness; the Public Affairs and Human Resources Departments, and the Office of Workforce Diversity. He also has responsibility for distributed administrative services and business support personnel who are matrixed to the scientific and operations divisions. David will be working closely with Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Fernandez to coordinate and integrate the Laboratory’s business functions.

David has worn a variety of managerial hats since arriving at the Lab in 1991, providing distinguished service as Division Director of EH&S, Special Operations Deputy, and Division Director for Business Services.

Adding these appointments to our already strong senior team, we can move forward with confidence as the University submits its proposal to continue managing LBNL.
