Lab to Help Examine
Air Quality in Planes

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration will establish a new "Center of Excellence" to examine cabin air quality and study chemical and biological threats in airliners. Researchers from the Environmental Energy Technologies Division's Indoor Environment Department and several universities will participate in the "Air Transportation Center of Excellence for Airliner Cabin Environment Research." Lab Scientists William Fisk and Thomas McKone are principal investigators. Auburn, Purdue, Harvard, and UC Berkeley are among the participating campuses. For more information about the FAA Centers, go here.

SPECIAL EVENT

Annual Beach Clean-Up Happens This Saturday

California Coastal Clean-up Day will take place from 9 to noon tomorrow, part of an international effort to clean beaches, bays and waterways. Volunteers are encouraged to show up at one of three locations - in Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville - with gloves, sunscreen and hat. Bags, tally cards and raffle tickets will be distributed. Last year, the shoreline clean-up effort in the East Bay included 1,200 people removing more than 11 tons of garbage. Go here to locate the nearest gathering location, and here for detailed information about the local sites. Groups of 10 or more need to pre-register.
