$1.5 Million European
Award for Cavalleri

Cavalleri
Andrea Cavalleri, a physicist in the Materials Sciences Division, is returning from a trip to Sweden where he collected his "European Young Investigator Award," presented by the European Science Foundation.   Cavalleri is one of 25 recipients of this award, which comes with a grant worth more than $1.5 million. The EURYI Awards seek to encourage outstanding young researchers from anywhere in the world to work in Europe and lead their own research team. This is the first year they have been presented. Cavalleri won for his femtosecond time x-ray studies of ultrafast phenomena in nano-sized particles. For more about the EURYI Awards, go here.

New, Improved JGI
Website Launched

The Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has launched a newly designed website with refreshed content and new features. The "JGI Science" section highlights recent scientific results by JGI researchers. In the "Education" area, a step-by-step explanation of how sequencing is done at JGI has been added. Under "Sequencing," one can now find out what organisms JGI is currently sequencing, and monitor progress. The "About Us" section describes the work of every JGI department. Also added are accessibility features for users with disabilities — particularly tailored for those with low vision and the blind. Go here to visit the new site.

Monthly timecards for Sept. 30 are now available. Timecards for both bi-weekly periods will be available after noon on Monday. Questions should be directed to timekeepers and supervisors.
