Two More From Lab
Win Career Awards

As reported yesterday, the White House announced 57 winners of the nation's highest award for scientists at the early stages of their careers — 2003 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. In addition to Margaret Torn, with Berkeley Lab’s Earth Sciences Division, recipients included two more Lab researchers — Michael Eisen, with the Lab’s Genomics Division and adjunct professor of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley, and Kimmen Sjölander, with the Physical Biosciences Division and head of UC Berkeley’s Phylogenomics Group. Go here for the story on the campus recipients. (See a feature on all three Lab scientists in next Friday’s issue of The View).

Pang to Develop ‘PDA’
For Pollution Exposure

Pang

Yanbo Pang of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division has received funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a technology for assessing human exposure to airborne pollutants. The technology will use a sorbent-coated foam capable of absorbing volatile and semi-volatile organic gases. The foam will be incorporated into prototype multiple pollutant personal samplers for both gases and particles. These personal data assistant-sized samplers could simultaneously measure workplace and home hazards such as ozone, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter at high sensitivity.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Voter Registration Forms
To Be Available at Lab

Two civic-minded employees from Environmental Energy Technologies will assist qualified Lab employees in registering to vote in the November general election. Marc Fischer and Lynn Price will provide voter registration forms and information in the cafeteria lobby, beginning next Wednesday, Sept. 15. They will staff a table that day during the noon hour to answer questions and distribute forms for Alameda and Contra Costa counties, then leave the forms for pick-up on subsequent days. Registration deadline is October 18.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Maintenance Will Cause
Weekend Power Outages

Several power outages are scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday to allow for equipment maintenance and modification. They include:
  • Buildings 51F, 55, 55A, 56, 60 and 63 from 6 a.m.Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday. The emergency generator will provide power to connected loads in buildings 55 and 56. Contact Jim Murphy (x4175 or x6023) or Glenn Skipper (x6125).
  • Building 90 Complex, between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. The emergency generator will provide power to connected loads. Contact Jim Murphy or Tamara Krymskaya (x5371).
  • Buildings 85, 85A and 85B between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. The emergency generator will provide power to connected loads. Contact Jim Murphy.
  • The Old Town area will have partial outages Saturday for equipment modifications at buildings 16, 17, 27, 52 and 53. Read building posting for loads affected. Contact Jim Murphy or Andrew Tyrrell (x4899).

Caution Urged During
Paving This Weekend

Road drilling and paving will take place near Buildings 7C, 27, 52, 52A, 53, and 44 this weekend. Pedestrians and drivers are urged to use caution when traveling through this area. Tomorrow, two road areas will be resurfaced: the intersection in the area of Building 6 door B, Building 43, and partially in front of the fire truck parking area; and the road from buildings 58 and 47 to the south end of Building 46. The roadway to Sally's Alley in the Building 7 area will be closed to non-emergency through-traffic. Flaggers and detours will be in place all day Saturday. Some parking spaces will be blocked off south and west of the fire truck parking area today and Saturday. For further information, contact Mike Elizalde at x6021.

Server Maintenance
Set for Sunday Morning

In an effort to meet dynamic cyber security threats, the Lab’s Information Technology and Services Division (ITSD) will perform maintenance on central e-mail, directory, and web servers this Sunday. ITSD will update, upgrade, and patch various central computer systems between 8 a.m. and noon. E-mail, directory, or web services may be unavailable during this maintenance window. Contact the Help Desk for questions about maintenance issues. Go here to see ITSD's central server maintenance schedule.
