Respiratory Illness
Linked to Traffic

In the first U.S. study evaluating a link between traffic pollution and respiratory symptoms, state scientists found that the air contaminants spewed from busy roads may pose a health risk to children. By monitoring air and surveying the health of 1,109 Bay Area pupils, researchers found moderately higher rates of wheezing, excessive phlegm and other asthma and bronchitis symptoms in those living in and attending schools in neighborhoods with higher levels of motor vehicle pollution when compared with other children in the study. The study was conducted by the Cal/EPA's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and Berkeley Lab. Full story.

SAFETY NOTE

PI's Must Survey Labs Before Cleaning Requests

Prior to scheduling custodial staff work in a posted Radiation Material Area, the responsible principal investigator (PI) must ensure that the area has been surveyed and found free of radioactive contamination. The PI or designee must perform and document the survey or contact Operational Health Physics (OHP) for support. For more information, contact David Kestell at x7157.
