Respiratory
Illness
Linked to Traffic
In
the first U.S. study evaluating a link between traffic
pollution and respiratory symptoms, state scientists
found that the air contaminants spewed from busy roads
may pose a health risk to children. By monitoring air
and surveying the health of 1,109 Bay Area pupils, researchers
found moderately higher rates of wheezing, excessive
phlegm and other asthma and bronchitis symptoms in those
living in and attending schools in neighborhoods with
higher levels of motor vehicle pollution when compared
with other children in the study. The study was conducted
by the Cal/EPA's Office of Environmental Health Hazard
Assessment and Berkeley Lab. Full
