The last time you bought a new refrigerator or washing machine, you may have overlooked one feature that Steve Wiel thinks about a lot: the energy-efficiency label. In America, the label is a bright yellow square that shows how much energy the appliance will use in a year and compares it to other appliances of its type. But other countries lack uniform labels and standards to help consumers compare appliances. Steve Wiel, chair of the Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program and Berkeley Lab scientist, talked with e-FFICIENCY NEWS about standards and labeling and his other energy efficiency work. The problem of spyware — hidden software that gathers and sends information about you and your system without your authorization — is getting out of control. Not only does spyware spy on you, but your system can become so full of spyware that it can slow to a crawl. The problem is worse in Windows systems. Windows users, go here to download a copy of Spybot, an effective anti-spyware program. Once the program is installed, be sure to run it every day.

Chemistry Nobel Goes
To 2 Israelis, 1 American

Israelis Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko and American Irwin Rose won the 2004 Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for discovering a key way cells destroy unwanted proteins — starting with a chemical "kiss of death." Their work provides the basis for developing new therapies for diseases such as cervical cancer and cystic fibrosis. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honored Ciechanover, 57, Hershko, 67, and Rose, 78, for work they did in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Full story.

At Lab-wide Reception

New Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu took time out of his busy schedule yesterday to meet staff at a welcome reception in the cafeteria. More than 200 employees turned out to hear Director Chu's optimistic assessment of the Laboratory's future and his vision for more "golden moments" of science. Workshop on Site Services Next Week

Don Prestella, with the Lab's Facilities Division, will lead a discussion on services provided by the stores, fleet operations, bus services, off-site warehouse, and property management. The Lab's voice pager radio system will cease operations at midnight, Dec. 31, when new National Telecommunications and Information Administration regulations go into effect.
