SHARES Campaign:
Just
Three Days Left
Only
three days remain in the SHARES campaign, which ends
this Wednesday. SHARES supports Berkeley Lab's commitment
to reach out to surrounding communities and help organizations
that depend largely on donations. Donors can commit
contributions through a website
that allows employees to select charities, choose a
method of payment payroll deduction, check or
credit card and disburse funds among the charities.
Forms are also available in Building 65. As of Nov.
19, 61 people have donated a total of $17,175.

Lab Drivers Earn
Safe Driving Credits
A total of 19 bus, truck and fleet drivers were honored
recently in Berkeley Lab's 49th Annual Safe Driver's
Award Program. Each driver who has not had a preventable
vehicle accident in this case, during the calendar
year 2003 received a certificate for one year
of credit towards his or her safe driver record.
At every 5-year credit interval, the safe drivers earn
a spot cash award. Within the three groups honored,
the cumulative years of safety credits is 176. To be
in the program, employees need to drive at least 50
percent time as a part of their job duties. To see a
list of the 18 bus drivers, 10 truck drivers and the
fleet operations drivers who earned certificates, go
here.

Congress
Agrees on
DOE Science Funding
This
weekend, Congress passed the FY 2005 Energy and Water
Development Appropriations bill, which funds the Department
of Energy, including the Office of Science. At approximately
$3.63 billion, the appropriated level is about $197 million
more than the Administration wanted. All scientific program
areas within the Office of Science realized a portion
of this increase, including an additional $30 million
for Advanced Scientific Computing Research. The Energy
and Water bill's passage hinged on a compromise reached
last week to fund Yucca Mountain at last year's level
of $577 million.

Tips for 'Sandwich
Generation' Staff Emmanuel Gomez from UC Berkeley's Tang Center will facilitate a workshop on Thursday, Dec. 2, for "sandwiched" employees who provide care for both children and elders. He will offer tips on reducing stress and provide references to community resources. The event runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Building 66-316. Registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 30. Go here to sign up (ASD 9028).
Retraining for Laser
Safety Now Online
Laser Safety Retraining can now be done online. The website includes a presentation of the material and a test. Upon passing the test, course credit will automatically be recorded in the Lab's training database and employee training profiles will be updated. Laser safety retraining (EHS 0281) is required every three years. Go here to access the course.
