Chu Stresses Campus
Ties in Bold Vision
By Rachel Luna

Chu

His office isn't even decorated yet, but Steven Chu — the newly appointed director of Berkeley Lab — already has big plans for the Lab and UC Berkeley. Chu, who took over the hilltop facility in August, said he is not daunted by the task of overseeing the Lab's $521 million budget and steering UC through a national bidding process to fight for its control. The key to this task is strengthening connections between the UC Berkeley campus and the 73-year-old laboratory, Chu said. Full story.

COMPUTER UPDATE

'Phishing' Scam Targets
Washington Mutual

The bad guys are again trying to con people into revealing credit card, accounts, and other financial information. The latest ploy appears to be a message from Washington Mutual Bank, informing recipients that "technical services of the Bank are carrying out a planned software upgrade" and each customer must click on a web link and then enter their data. Don't fall for this latest identity theft attempt.

SPECIAL EVENT

Glaser
Nobel Laureate Glaser
To Speak Thursday

Donald Glaser, who won the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the bubble chamber while at Berkeley Lab, will be the inaugural speaker in the Computing Sciences Seminar Series. Starting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Glaser will discuss "What Can We See, How Do We See It, and Why Do We See Things That Aren't There?" The seminar will be held in Perseverance Hall. Glaser teaches on campus in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Year-End 403(b), 457(b) Contribution Reminder

The deadline to make changes to 403(b) deductions for the 2004 tax year for monthly paid employees is Wednesday, and for bi-weekly paid employees the deadline is Dec. 10. The deadline to make changes to 457(b) deductions for the 2004 tax year for monthly and bi-weekly paid employees is Wednesday. One of the best ways to reduce income taxes is to maximize contributions to your 403(b) and/or 457(b) accounts. Deductions made from your paycheck will lower your taxable earnings reported on your annual W-2 form. Go here to make changes to the 403 (b) plan, and here for 457 (b).

WORLD OF SCIENCE

Keck Images of Uranus
Reveal Ring, Fireworks
By Robert Sanders

As summer draws to a close in the southern hemisphere of Uranus, storm clouds are brewing in the upper atmosphere, northern hemisphere winds are gusting to 250 miles per hour, and the planet's rings are getting brighter every day. This weather report comes from researchers using the Keck II 10-meter telescope atop Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii, where recent observations are proving that Uranus is not the "boring and unchanging" planet people have assumed, according to Imke de Pater, professor of astronomy at UC Berkeley. Bush Set
To Keep
Core Science Team
By Emma Marris

George Bush's re-election and his party's increased clout in Congress leave him in an even stronger position to set the national agenda on research, say science lobbyists. The administration's scientific A-team looks set to stay — Elias Zerhouni is likely to remain the director of the National Institutes of Health and Bush appointee Arden Bement is on course to run the National Science Foundation (NSF). Paul Gilman, head of research and development at the Environmental Protection Agency, and energy secretary Spencer Abraham, are likely to move. Bush's science adviser, Jack Marburger, has given no indication of his plans. Full story.
