Orbach, Program Staff
Here Today for On-Site

Orbach
Office of Science Director Ray Orbach will make his annual pilgrimage to Berkeley Lab today to assess programs present and future in a day-long "On-Site Review" in Perseverance Hall. Orbach and several of his program managers from Washington will hear a series of presentations by the Lab's scientific and operational leadership reflecting the laboratory's priorities and research plans. Lab Director Charles Shank and his senior staff will host the program (Attendance is invitation-only).

Conferees Discuss Wide-Field Space Imaging

A conference on Wide-Field Imaging From Space is being held today and tomorrow at Berkeley Lab. Some 150 scientists from around the world are focusing on the scientific opportunities afforded by imaging in the optical and near-infrared.  In addition to invited presentations on subjects like dark energy and matter, galaxies, quasars, and supernovae, there will be a number of contributed talks as well as prominent poster sessions in the Building 50 Auditorium and the Cafeteria. Rocky Kolb, a physicist from Fermilab, was last night's dinner speaker, and Office of Science Director Ray Orbach will give this evening's reception remarks. More than 100 collaborators on the SuperNova Acceleration Probe (SNAP) project will have a follow-on conference Wednesday and Thursday.  Go here for more information on the conference.

PEOPLE

Zeman is Lab's Newest Health Physics Fellow

Zeman

Gary Zeman, head of Berkeley Lab's radiation safety program, was recently selected to be a Fellow of the Health Physics Society (HPS).   Selection was based on his contributions in the field of dosimetry, on studying health effects of electromagnetic radiation, for the development of a health physicist certification review course, and for his years of service to HPS. He joins colleague Peter Lichty, head of the Lab's Occupational Medicine program, as a Fellow in the Environment, Health and Safety Division. Lichty was honored by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in 1988.

SCIENCE EDUCATION

Host A Teacher
This Summer

Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME) has provided funding for a group of teachers to work at the Lab during the summer to gain useful skills in math and science education. The Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education is looking for research groups that can provide an eight-week internship for one or more of these teachers. The IISME program uses industry-education partnerships to provide teachers with the experiences and tools they need to prepare students to be lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and productive employees. Go here for more information.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Inventory Scheduled
At Central Stores

Facilities Stores will be conducting a wall-to-wall inventory starting at 11 a.m. this Friday through Wednesday, May 26. To conduct the inventory without interruption, the stores counter in Building 78 will be closed to walk up customers. Those needing project-critical material during this time can call x5087. Customers requiring material from Metal Stores should call x5497. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to customers. Questions or concerns can be directed to Don Prestella at x4224. It is anticipated that normal Stores operations will return on Thursday, May 27.

Scholarship Created To Honor Lab Employee

A scholarship fund has been created to honor the memory of Ruth-Mary Larimer, who passed away last fall. Many considered the long-time Lab employee a pioneer for women in science. She worked with various research groups here from 1954 to 1991, including the Nuclear Science Division. The scholarship will support students in UC Berkeley's Physics Department. Contribution checks (payable to "UC Regents") can be sent to Virginia Rapp, 366 LeConte Hall, campus, MC 7300.

Baseball Ticket
Sale Continues

Tickets are still available for the 6 p.m., Saturday, June 26 baseball game between the A's and the Giants in Oakland. They will be sold between noon and 1 p.m. in the cafeteria all this week. Payment must be made by check.
