Memo from Facilities Director George Reyes On
Appointment of Steve Black as Plant Operations Head

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Black to fill the newly created position of Department Head - Plant Operations for the Facilities Division.   Steve brings to this position more than 25 years of relevant experience in construction, maintenance and physical plant operations.

Steve is currently the Manager of Building Operations for Santa Clara County where he has responsibility for managing and maintaining the real property and infrastructure assets of the County.   He leads a large group of approximately 300 staff in providing services for remodeling projects and the repair and maintenance of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilation, roofs, locks and hardware, electrical systems, elevators, emergency generators, fire and security systems, architectural finishes, glass, wall and floor coverings, signage, and plumbing.

Prior to assuming his role at Santa Clara County, Steve was the Director of Plant Operations at UC Davis where he managed maintenance, skilled crafts, small projects and utilities functions serving a complex research university.   Steve has also had significant roles with the city of Rocklin, PG&E and other entities in which he performed a broad variety of facilities and public works functions.

A Mechanical Engineer, Steve brings to his new role a wealth of abilities and skills including intimate knowledge of the Maximo information system, various facilities service delivery models, and a solid background in developing facilities procedures and polices that enhance cost effectiveness, productivity and work flow.

Steve will formally assume his new duties on April 15, 2004, but will be visible at the Laboratory beginning March 16 as he begins the process of acclimation and transition.   Please join me in welcoming Steve to the LBNL Facilities family and feel free to give him a personal greeting as you have the opportunity to meet him.
