Demolition Continues; Crane and Tracks Gone

The dismantling of the External Proton Beam hall next to the Bevatron on Cyclotron Road is proceeding piece-by-piece.  Electronic Technician George Potter of the 88-Inch Cyclotron recently captured on film the removal of some of the biggest pieces of all -- a 190,000-pound bridge crane and its tracks last Thursday. The 144-foot-long crane was lowered from the crane rails using two 200-ton mobile cranes.

FY05 LDRD Proposals Due in Divisions April 16

Lab Director Charles Shank has issued the FY2005 Call for Proposals for the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, which provides support for projects in forefront areas of science that can enrich Berkeley Lab's R&D capabilities and achievements. Multi-investigator and multi-divisional initiatives that address problems of scale are especially encouraged. Principal investigators must submit proposals to division directors by April 16. Go here for schedule and forms.

Lab Physicist Featured
In SLAC Publication

A Q&A with Berkeley Lab physics researcher Robert Cahn appears in the most recent issue of Interaction Point, the staff newspaper of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In the article, Cahn -- who is the chair of the BABAR Publications Board and known for "the clarity of his prose as well as his calculations" -- answers questions about publishing papers in BABAR. Server Maintenance Schedule Changed

In an effort to meet dynamic cyber security threats, Information Technologies and Services Division (ITSD) will start performing maintenance on central e-mail, directory, and web servers once a month. Starting this Sunday, a regular schedule of patch maintenance begins, and will take place on the second Sunday of each month between 8 a.m. and noon. Employees may encounter unavailability of e-mail, directory, or web service during these times. Go here to see ITSD's central server maintenance schedule. For more information, contact the Help Desk.

'Energy Hog' Youth Campaign Launched

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham recently launched a national public service advertising campaign designed to make children and their parents aware of energy efficient behavior through a new spokes-villain, the Energy Hog, an energy waster. Abraham said he hopes the campaign will raise awareness by developing an appreciation for energy efficiency at an early age. Go here to read a press release on the program, and here to visit the interactive Energy Hog website.
