Dynes

In the first of what he hopes to be many video letters, UC President Dynes presents a casual discussion of his on-going tour of the system's campuses, the university's budget, situation, and his search for key UC positions, including the directorship of Berkeley Lab.  Go here to view the letter (requires RealPlayer).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Wash and Re-Lamp
To Begin March 22

The Lab's annual "wash and re-lamp" effort starts on Monday, March 22. As part of this project, a lighting contractor will clean up ceiling light fixtures and replace fluorescent light bulbs in several Lab buildings, including 84, 84A, 74, 66, 62, 62A, 25, 25A, 26, 2, 46, 46A, 46B, 46C, 46D, 47, 65A, 65B, 55, 90, 90 trailers, and 937.   The work will take place between 6 p.m. and approximately 4 a.m. Notices will be put up in each building about two weeks before works begins to alert occupants. Those with special scheduling needs should contact Larry Begley as far in advance as possible. Employees in the affected buildings are encouraged to tidy up their work areas and secure valuables while work is being conducted.

Plan Now For
Summer Camps

Summer may seem like a long way off, but the time to start scheduling your child's summer camps is now. Early registration for the Lab's Science Exploration Camps -- which provides a mix of recreational and science-oriented activities for elementary school-age children -- begins March 19. Cost for the weeklong camps (which run from July 12 to August 20) is $185. The cost increases after April 10. The camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; however, before- and after-camp care is available at no charge. Go here to learn more.

Selkowitz Touts Glass's
Benefits in D.C. Talk

Steven Selkowitz, head of Environmental Energy Technologies Division's Building Technologies Department, will give at talk at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. this Wednesday.   In his lecture -- part of the museum's "Building for the 21st Century" series -- Selkowitz will explain how "new glazing technologies, innovative facade designs, and better tools promise to convert windows into net energy suppliers that also enhance comfort and well-being." The National Building Museum is a private, nonprofit educational institution dedicated to exploring America's built environment.

Xu Honored For Work In Contamination Control

Xu

Environmental Energy Technologies Division researcher Tengfang (Tim) Xu has recently received the 2004 Willis J. Whitfield Award from the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology. He was honored "for his numerous published papers in the field of contamination control and for his support of IEST programs." Sandia Lab's Willis Whitfield -- the award's namesake -- is known worldwide as the discoverer and developer of the "laminar flow" theory, considered the single most significant advance in contamination control technology.

SPECIAL EVENT

Science Workshops For Middle-School Girls

The Society for Women in the Physical Sciences at Berkeley present two science workshops, on physics and astronomy, at a special conference for girls grades 6 to 8. The "Expanding Your Horizons" event -- Saturday, March 13 at Mills College -- seeks to increase young women's interest in mathematics and science; create awareness of the career opportunities for women in math and science fields; and provide an opportunity to form personal contacts with women working in traditionally male occupations.
