Storm Knocked Out ALS, But No Major Damage

Last week’s unusually intense winter rainstorm, with winds that were at one time clocked at 60 knots on the Hill, was responsible for a blackout at the Advanced Light Source and massive debris movement all over the site. But no major equipment losses were reported, and structural damage was minimal, according to Operations Maintenance Manager Don Weber. Full story.

Regional Science Bowl

The Harker School of San Jose won an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. and the National Science Bowl as it bested 16 other high school teams on Saturday at Berkeley Lab in regional competition. Harker emerged from both the morning's round-robin and the afternoon's double-elimination rounds as champion over runner-up Albany High School, a former national champ, and third-place Homestead High of Cupertino. More on the day's events will appear in Friday's issue of The View.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

New Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics Used

For the first time, scientists from UC Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore Lab have observed that distant larger stars formed in flattened accretion disks just like the sun. Using the laser guide star adaptive optics system created by LLNL scientists, the team was able to determine that some of the relatively young yet massive Herbig Ae/Be stars contain biconical nebulae, polarized jets and circumstellar disks.
