ANNOUNCEMENT

Calendar Workshop
Hosted by ASD

Employees are invited to attend a class on using the Lab's calendaring system on Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, in Building 2-100B. Curtis McDonald, with Information and Technologies Services, will share with participants some special functions that will help users more successfully set up calendar events, including scheduling tips and tricks. Because space is limited, registration is required. Go here to sign up (ASD 9033).

COMPUTER UPDATES

Unix and Linux
Users, Beware

Unix and Linux system users and administrators -- did you know that an entry of "xhost +" in your X11 config-uration file, the path and filename for which vary from one flavor of Unix/Linux to another, is extremely dangerous? It can allow virtually anyone to gain control of your system. The Computer Protection Program strongly urges you to add the name(s) of hosts to which you want to give access, such as "xhost + lblserver," in the appropriate file in your system. For questions or advice call the Help Desk at x4357 or send email to [email protected].

Physics Research Hits
Chronicle's Front Page

Fadeyev, left, and Haber

The media popularity of research conducted by Lab physicists Carl Haber and Vitaliy Fadeyev continues, as a feature story on their efforts to extract clear, audible voices from broken, mold-eaten and otherwise unplayable early recordings appeared on the front page of yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle. The story has appeared in numerous other publications across the country over the last two months. Go here to read the story.

Rodriguez-Vieitez

When Elena Rodriguez- Vieitez went home to Spain for Christmas in 2002, she thought she was taking just a three-week break from her doctoral work in nuclear engineering at UC Berkeley. But a long security review delayed her visa until the following March. For nearly three months, Rodriguez-Vieitez did not know when or even if she could resume her studies or her job at Berkeley Lab. "I was completely in shock," she said. "I am in the middle of my studies there. I have lived in the United States for eight years. They wouldn't give me a clue as to how long it would take." Full story (registration required).
