Berkeley Lab Welcomes
DOE’s Education Initiative
Berkeley
Lab, with its wide range of educational programs designed
to reach students of all ages, welcomed Secretary of
Energy Spencer Abraham’s July 8 announcement that
DOE and its national laboratories are launching an initiative
to promote science literacy and help develop the next
generation of scientists and engineers. "We are
pleased that Secretary Abraham has announced a new science
education initiative focusing on teachers and students,"
said Berkeley Lab Director Charles V. Shank.
More information about DOE’s science education
initiative is available here.

New
Institute at SLAC
Will Do SNAP Electronics
The
Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology
(KIPAC) broke ground June 28 for the new Fred Kavli
Building at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
Researchers at the institute are looking to unravel
fundamental mysteries that connect the tiniest particles
and universe-shaping forces. KIPAC also has joined forces
with other institutions in a joint NASA-DOE project
aimed at measuring dark energy. The institute will develop
and build the digital electronics for SNAP, a proposed
space-based telescope project led by Berkeley Lab. Full
story.
Software
Spinoff Wind
River Gets New CEO
Wind
River Systems Inc., a software company founded by two
former Berkeley Lab employees, has never lived up to
its potential. But some investors are betting that the
company has found the kind of leader it has long needed:
an experienced outsider willing to revamp the company's
strategy. The Alameda company hired Kenneth Klein as
its chairman and chief executive in January —
ending a search that began in June 2003.
Wind River was founded in 1981 by Jerry Fiddler and
David Wilner, who began writing software programs for
customers out of a Berkeley garage. By 1987, they had
created their own operating system, VxWorks. Full
story.
