JGI
Launches Community
Sequencing Program
The
Joint Genome Institute (JGI) is poised for a resounding
response to the age-old question, “If we
build it, will they come?” Already, collaborators
are queuing up to take advantage of one of the
world’s most powerful DNA sequencing facilities
for the debut of DOE’s Community Sequencing
Program (CSP). "The primary goal of the CSP
is to provide a world-class sequencing resource
for the expanding the diversity of disciplines—geology,
oceanography, and ecology, among others—that
can benefit from the application of genomics,"
says JGI Director Eddy Rubin,
Berkeley Lab's Genomics Division Director. JGI
is a collaboration of Berkeley, Livermore and
Los Alamos laboratories. Full

State's
Nanotech Fate
Tied to Worker Skills
By
Candace Stuart
California’s
inability to produce a technically skilled work force
compromises the state’s standing as a leader in
nanotechnology, according to a state-sponsored report
released Tuesday. The California Council on Science
and Technology’s report
also calls for an advisory council for the governor’s
office and a select committee for the Senate and Assembly
to steer the long-term development of nanotechnology
in the state. Full

Campisi
to Discuss Aging and Disease Tomorrow
Judith
Campisi of the Life Science Division will discuss
aging as the largest single risk factor for developing
a panoply of diseases, including cancer, at 11 a.m.
tomorrow in the Building 50 auditorium. Recent progress
in aging research has shed new light on how genes and
the environment govern the rate at which people age.
To register for the workshop, which is part of the Administrative
Services Department (ASD) Academy’s Scientists
for Non-Scientists Series, please visit the Employee
Self Service website.
