Lester Named to Berkeley
Chancellor Search Group

Lester

William Lester, with the Lab’s Chemical Sciences Division, is among the 17-member committee of university regents, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community representatives that were named by UC President Robert Dynes to advise him in the search for the next chancellor of UC Berkeley. Last September, Robert Berdahl announced his intention to step down as chancellor next summer. Berdahl, who was appointed UC Berkeley's eighth chancellor in 1997, plans to take a year off and then return to campus to teach and pursue scholarly work. Go here for more information.

UC Wants to Team Up
Business With Labs
By Ian Hoffman

The University of California is headed into a first-ever partnership with private defense and government contractors to run as many as three federal laboratories. Next week, UC executives will ask the university's governing Board of Regents for authority to team with "industrial organizations" for handing the business end and operations of Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore and Berkeley National Labs. ANNOUNCEMENTS

A New Emergency
Response Guide

An updated version of the red/white Emergency Response Guide is now available. Designed to hang on a wall, the guides give employees directions about response during fires, earthquakes, spills, injuries or threats. The new guide (9/2003) should replace those dated 4/28/99. Those needing copies of the guide can send an e-mail to Nikki De Jager that includes a name, mailstop, and number of copies needed. For more information, contact Valerie Quigley at x7032.

Update Name and
Address Info Soon

Employees who have moved or changed their name during the last year, and have not sent this information to the Lab’s Human Resources office, should do so before Jan. 16 to ensure receipt of 2003 W2 forms. To make this change, visit the Employee Self Service website. Employees with an international address or without access to the Internet should contact their HR Center for assistance.
