Simon Put In Charge
Of Computing Sciences

Simon

Horst Simon, who has been Director of two divisions at Berkeley Lab - the National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) and Computational Research divisions - will add Associate Laboratory Director-Computing Sciences to his portfolio. Lab Director Charles Shank made the announcement yesterday at an all-hands meeting in the 50 Auditorium. Simon succeeds Bill McCurdy, who resigned last fall to return to his research programs. As ALD, Simon will represent the interests of the three computing divisions as a member of Shank's Director's Action Committee (DAC). Read more about Simon and his new role in the March 5 issue of The View.

UCSC Chancellor Named
As Provost for UC System

Greenwood

M.R.C. Greenwood was appointed provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, the second highest post in the UC system, during a special meeting of the Regents of the University of California yesterday. Greenwood, who is an internationally recognized expert in genetics and nutrition and a national leader in science and higher education policy, has served as chancellor of UC Santa Cruz since 1996. She will assume her new post on April 1. Full story.

Display of Mars Pictures At NERSC Extended

Due to popular demand, the exhibit of images from the two Mars rovers -- assembled by Chip Smith with the Lab's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center -- will continue through March 16. The program will run at 4:30 and 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, and take place in the Access Grid Node (room 12111) on the first floor of Building 50B.

A Catalyst for Peace and Scientific Development
By Glenda Chui

Hussain

As hopes for peace flare and fade in the Middle East, traditional enemies are working to build the region's first major center for cutting-edge research. If they succeed, it will be a place where Israeli and Palestinian scientists work side by side with colleagues from dozens of nations. Organizers hope the project will demonstrate that science can triumph over politics and revenge. "I think this is a good way to help seed the understanding between people,'' said Zahid Hussain, a materials scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Full story.

New Data on Doomsday Ideas: Big Rip vs. Big Crunch
By James Glanz

A dark unseen energy is steadily pushing the universe apart, just as Einstein predicted, suggesting the universe may have a more peaceful end than recent theories envision, according to striking new measurements of distant exploding stars by the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. "It's so tantalizing and so beautiful to see this kind of data set," said Berkeley Lab physicist Saul Perlmutter. Full story.

COMPUTER UPDATES

Avoid Having Your Network Access Blocked

Employees with Windows NT, 200, XP or Server 2003 systems that are still vulnerable to the Windows ASN.1 library as of this Thursday will have their network access blocked. Users can go here to obtain the hot fix for their system. For assistance in obtaining and/or installing the fix, or to unblock systems, contact the Help Desk.

Password Registration Process Simplified

To help new employees start using Lab services like email and calendar more quickly, ITSD and the Site Access Office have collaborated to make the assignment of "LDAP" passwords. New employees who report to the site access office in Building 65A to get their ID badges will also be assigned a temporary LDAP password.
