Friends of Science
Lecture Next Week

IMAGE: Tom Wenzel
Wenzel

On Thursday, Feb. 19, EETD scientist Tom Wenzel will explore the question “Are SUV’s Safer Than Cars?” during a talk for the Lab’s “Friends of Science” lecture series. During his talk — which begins at 5:30 p.m. in Perseverance Hall — Wenzel will discuss the common perception that heavier vehicles provide greater protection to their drivers than lighter vehicles. He has found, however, that many heavier pickups and SUVs are not safer than cars, and that these heavier vehicles inflict greater damage on drivers in other vehicles. Full story.

Science Bowl Coming;
Lab Volunteers Needed

A regional Science Bowl for 17 competing high schools in the area will be held at Berkeley Lab on Saturday, Feb. 28. Moderators, timers and scorekeepers are needed to help with the round-robin tournament of math and science knowledge. Volunteer training will be conducted on Feb. 25 during the lunch hour. Go here for more information, or call Joe Crippen (x5816) or Doug Owen (x7682).

Colwell

National Science Foundation Director Rita Colwell will assume the position of Chairman of Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc. upon her retirement, effective February 21. Among the highlights of her tenure, Colwell championed increases in grant size, which rose from an annual average of $90,000 in 1998 to $142,000 at present, and promoted innovative collaborations across traditional disciplines such as biocomplexity in the environment, nanoscale science and engineering, bioinformatics and information technology. ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Outdoors Club Forming At the Lab

A new employee activities association "outdoors" club is being organized at the Lab with the goal of enjoying the Bay Area environment and connecting with fellow employees. A number of possible activities are being considered, including hiking, backpacking, camping, and jogging/running. A preliminary meeting to determine interest and to decide future events will take place during a hike/picnic lunch on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 11a.m., at Inspiration Point in Berkeley’s Tilden Park. Those who are interested should contact Dinah Levy.

Today is Last Chance
To Donate Blood

The Lab’s winter blood drive ends today at 1:30 p.m. Employees interested in donating blood can stop by Bldg. 70A-3377 or call Charlotte Bochra (x4268) or Ariel Mercado (773-2402) to make appointments.

Course on Security
Basics To Be Offered

Computer security is becoming increasingly important; according to some statistics, an Internet-connected system is now attacked, on average, three-to-five times a day. What are the major threats, and what kinds of solutions work best? These issues will be addressed in a free course, “Security Basics,” offered by the Computer Protection Program, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 26 in Perseverance Hall. Go here to read a course description, and here to enroll.

If Search Engine Fails,
Call a Librarian
by Jeffrey Selingo

IMAGE: Berkeley Lab Library

For generations, reference librarians have been known as the source for answers to perplexing questions on almost any subject. In recent years libraries found other means for answering questions, offering reference services over the telephone, by e-mail, and more recently, through 24-hour Internet chat services. Librarians increasingly find themselves on the sidelines in the question-answering business. So they are slowly warming to the idea that they must educate the public about ways to sort through the mountain of available information. Full story. See what the Lab’s library has to offer, here.
