Automated Electricity
System Tested

Berkeley Lab researchers have completed the first successful test to evaluate automated demand response at five large building facilities. Demand-response technology manages electrical use in buildings over the internet, whenever high prices, blackouts, or overloaded electrical demand threaten the power grid. "This is the first test of fully automated demand response in multiple large buildings to reduce electricity consumption with two-way internet-based communications," said principal investigator Mary Ann Piette of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. Stanford Advances
X-Ray Science
By Ian Hoffman

Scientists are firing up the brightest, most powerful X-rays on the West Coast, working in a concrete tunnel of magnets and vacuum chambers at Stanford University. Combined with a similar X-ray machine at Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source, Stanford's new machine will turn the Bay Area into a world capital for X-ray science. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Traffic Changes
Tomorrow and Friday

Tomorrow and Friday, single-lane traffic controls will be in effect on MacMillan Road near Building 17, at the Segre Road intersection, to allow work on the adjacent hillside. For more information please call Tipasa Samatua at x5611.

Winter Blood Drive
Coming Soon

The Winter Blood Drive is scheduled for February 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and February 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Bldg. 70A-3377. Appointments can now be made on the American Red Cross web site. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment in order to ensure adequate staffing. For help scheduling appointments or donor requirements, call Charlotte Bochra at x4268.

Order New Furniture
Before Prices Increase

Thinking of ordering new furniture? Keep in mind that prices for all furniture under the UC system-wide contract with Steelcase will increase early next year (Feb. 2005). This makes the end of FY04 an opportune time to procure furniture. It takes six to eight weeks for furniture layouts to be designed, specified, ordered, delivered and installed. Contact Danica Truchlikova at x6511 with any questions.
