Antoni
Tomsia, Berkeley Lab’s materials scientist
who recently received a $4.3 million grant from the
National Institutes of Health to develop bone-like materials
that could greatly improve implants such as artificial
hips and shoulders, was on the air in Cincinnati recently.
Station WVXU-FM produced an interview with Tomsia about
his quest to harness the latest advances in nanotechnology
to fabricate implants that behave like real bone, and
included it in a recent edition of its “Focus
on Technology” series. Go here

Global
Warming Rise
Predicted by Simulation
By
Mike Toner
The
National Center for Atmospheric Research has released
the newest model of Earth's climate — a massive
computer simulation showing that global temperatures
may rise "significantly more" than early models
have predicted. The new Community Climate System Model
was created by four supercomputing centers, including
NERSC at Berkeley Lab. Predictions for increased
warming from a doubling of carbon dioxide levels next
century may not sound like much — 4.7 degrees
instead of 3.6 degrees — but researchers say the
difference could have a powerful effect on international
and domestic policy in the next few years. Full
story (requires registration).
