A Conveyor Belt For
The Nano-Age
In a development that brings the promise of mass production to nanoscale devices, Berkeley Lab scientists have transformed carbon nanotubes into conveyor belts capable of ferrying atom-sized particles to microscopic work sites. By applying a small electrical current to a carbon nanotube, they moved indium particles along the tube like auto parts on an assembly line. Their research, described in the April 29 issue of Nature, lays the groundwork for the high-throughput construction of atomic-scale optical, electronic, and mechanical devices that will power the burgeoning field of nanotechnology. Full story.

Changes
Added To
Parking Regulations
RPM Section 1.04, which describes the parking rules and regulations for Berkeley Lab, has been revised and updated to clarify issues around reserved spaces, stack parking, and eligibility. In addition, the parking enforcement system has been changed to add a limit on the number of violation-points an employee can have in one year before disciplinary action can be taken.

Conflict
Management
Class Next Week
UC Berkeley Ombudsperson Margo Wesley will facilitate a workshop on conflict resolution for Lab supervisors on Thursday, May 6, at 9 a.m. in Perseverance Hall. In this workshop, supervisors will learn skills and strategies that will help them convert potentially destructive conflicts into opportunities for growth and transformation. Go here to register (reference ASD 9042).
'EndNote' Training
Now
Available
Training
for EndNote -- an online search tool, a reference database,
and bibliography maker -- will be held on Wednesday,
May 5. A basic class (ASD 9021) will begin at 10 a.m.,
and an advanced class (ASD 9023) at 2 p.m. Both take
place in Building 90-0026. EndNote can search and retrieve
information from remote databases, and it specializes
in storing, managing, and indexing information in libraries.
Go here to register.
The classes are listed under the "Administrative Skill
Development" course type.
