May Forum to Explore
Nanotechnology Future

Berkeley Lab is co-sponsoring the "Berkeley Nanotechnology Forum," taking place on the UC Berkeley campus on Saturday, May 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The theme of this year's gathering is "The Future of Nano, Your Future in Nano." Prominent scientists and entrepreneurs — including Molecular Foundry Director Paul Alivisatos — will share their views on realistic near-term marketable applications and exciting career opportunities in the burgeoning nanotechnology area. Lab staff can attend free of charge, but seating is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Go here for details.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

'Barbecue Thursdays'
Will Run Into Summer

To honor the onset of picnic weather, the Berkeley Lab Cafeteria will feature an outdoor barbecue special today, and every Thursday (weather permitting) into the summer. Each week's lunch menu will include a different grilled entree (today is chicken breasts), packaged with sides for a special all-inclusive price. Employees are invited to lunch on the lawn or on the outdoor tables next to Building 54.

FACES AT THE LAB

Wendi Selak: Her Job
Is Very 'Beneficial'

Selak

Wendi Selak is a benefits representative who assists Lab employees with health and welfare questions. She's been at the Lab a little over two years. When asked what she likes most about her job, she replied: "The gratifying feeling that I get when I know that I have helped solved a benefits dilemma for an employee." When she's not answering questions about health insurance or retirement options, she can be found snowboarding, reading stories about historical figures, or playing with her 3-year-old nephew, who "amazes me every day." She also has a cat named Prince. "I called him Princess for the first six months of his life, because I thought he was a girl," she laughed.

Costco Memberships
Offered Next Week

As state employees, Berkeley Lab staff qualify for membership in the Costco Wholesale club program. Costco representatives will be in the Cafeteria lobby on Monday and the Building 937 lobby on Wednesday next week during the lunch hours. They will answer questions and sign up members ($45 for Gold Star membership, including a spouse card). For answers to questions about membership, go here.
