BES' Dehmer: Future
Depends on Budgets

Dehmer
Patricia Dehmer, DOE Associate Director of Science, offered a look ahead to the Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee at a recent meeting. "Budget drives everything that we do," Dehmer told the committee, describing the status of FY 2005 appropriations, the forthcoming FY 2005 budget request, and some guiding principles for FY 2006 and beyond. Meanwhile, appropriations bills may not be concluded much before Thanksgiving. Read the American Institute of Physics analysis here.

Former Lab Physicist
Helmholz Has Died

August Carl Helmholz, a nuclear physicist at UC Berkeley and the Lab, died Oct. 29 at his home in Lafayette, after a six-month decline in health. He was 88. Helmholz started his career in nuclear physics in 1937 under the late Ernest O. Lawrence. Helmholz worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II and continued his nuclear studies with various successors of the cyclotron at the Lab until his retirement in 1980. Full story.

POLICY UPDATE

Tips on Tracking
Your Lab Property

Because of the DOE’s “on demand” accountability requirements, it is crucial that Lab employees take appropriate measures to track the assets they are responsible for. This task is made easier by following incremental procedures at each lifecycle stage, from procurement to disposal. Go here to learn more about successful material management.
