New Grant Proposal System Launches Today

The Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) has announced the debut of the Research Administration Proposal Information Database (RAPID). RAPID replaces a 15-year-old system and is the Laboratory’s implementation of PeopleSoft’s Grants Management. It covers the administrative aspects of creating and managing non-DOE research proposals along with award authorization, project creation, and post-award administrative management.

RAPID is an integrated part of the Laboratory’s enterprise business system, FMS (Financial Management System), and is accessed through that system. This integration will allow the Laboratory administrative and management community to access important administrative, financial, and management sponsored research data, which was previously unavailable.

Division Directors and Principal Investigators will not notice a change in the review and approval of sponsored project proposals for the first month, but after that they’ll have the opportunity to use a web-based proposal approval system, which is currently being developed and tested. A Berkeley Lab community meeting will be held regarding this proposal approval system later this month.

Laboratory cross-functional teams from Administrative Services, Financial Services, Life Sciences and Environmental Energy Technologies divisions, as well as Information Systems and Services, have worked for over two years to document, model, and implement this new system. The effort was lead by Project Manager Steve Bakaley from ISS and Associate Project Director Phyllis Gale from SPO. The Project Director is Bill Wasson and the Application Owner is Jeff Weiner.
