Special War Events On Campus Next Week

Image of a campus vigil
UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl has invited the campus and lab communities to attend two special events next week that foster dialogue and education about the war with Iraq. On Monday at 8 p.m. on Sproul Plaza, a quiet nighttime vigil is planned during which conversation and reflection will be shared. On Tuesday night, a faculty forum, "War in Iraq" will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall. Faculty members will share their expertise on such topics as the war's impact on the Middle East, foreign policy, the economy, and the peace movement. Tickets, which are free, will be available at the Zellerbach Box Office Monday and Tuesday. Details can be found here.

Web-based System Will Report Med
'Near misses'

The University of California is installing a pioneering Web-based medical-event reporting system to improve patient safety in the UC medical centers and quickly pinpoint opportunities for improvement in patient care. The system will allow frontline medical workers to report on adverse and “near miss” medical events from most computers in a UC medical center. It will provide for early identification of trends and patterns of medical incidents. Once such patterns are identified, improvements can be made to improve patient safety. The UC effort is the first of its type in the nation, linking academic medical centers on a systemwide basis through the Internet, with provision for monthly conferences to address findings. Ergonomic Evaluations
Prevent Injuries

Strains and sprains are common injuries from strenuous exertion, but muscle soreness or tendon inflammation can also be caused by frequent light activities, such as computer work. The use of computers at Berkeley Lab has increased the risk for this type of injury. A workstation ergonomic evaluation is a way to identify and correct workplace risks. Employees can request ergonomic evaluations through their immediate supervisor, Division Safety Coordinator or EH&S Division Liaison. Lab management supports a safe workplace and encourages ergonomic evaluations and workstation corrections. Employees should complete recommended ergonomic training, report injuries, properly utilize ergonomic furniture and accessories, and use safe ergonomic work practices. Questions about the Ergonomics Program can be directed to Jeffrey Chung at 5818, or [email protected].
