In this week's issue of Physical Review Letters, Berkeley Lab’s
Eric Linder of the Physics Division explains how state of
the art observations of supernovae can map the expansion history
over 75% of the age of the universe. The brightness of a supernova
translates directly into its distance and light travel time, while
its redshift measures the scale of the universe when the supernova
exploded. Like tree rings, this record of growth of scales over
time, slowing and quickening, tells us about the cosmic environment.

Scientists Getting
TV Focus This Month
Astrophysicist
Saul Perlmutter and Environmental Scientist Max Sherman
are scheduled to appear before the TV cameras at Berkeley Lab this
month. Reporter Yung Choi and a crew from KTV, a Korean television
station in Los Angeles, will interview Perlmutter on March 17 about
his supernova research project. And a team from CBS’ Evening
Magazine, also out of Los Angeles, will film Sherman and discuss his
studies on duct tape today.

The Berkeley Fire Department, thanks to donations from UC Berkeley
and First Alert, Inc., has smoke detectors (including batteries)
available free of charge to Berkeley residents, including students
living off-campus. Applications for free detectors are available
from the Environment, Health & Safety department at UC Berkeley,
at any Berkeley Fire Station, or at the Fire Administration Office
at 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Full

Seminar Today on Lab Implementation
Of Microsoft's 'Active Directory'
There will be a seminar from 1:30-2:30 p.m. today in Perseverance
Hall for all Network Administrators and Professionals interested
in the status of Active Directory at Berkeley Lab. Douglas Spindler
from Computer Information Technology Group (CITG) will address how
and when Microsoft's Active Directory will be implemented at the
Lab. This is the first of a series of meetings to be held the first
Tuesday of every month regarding Active Directory at the Lab.
