Xi Awards Procter
Prize to Darleane Hoffman
Nuclear
chemist Darleane C. Hoffman has been named the recipient
of Sigma Xi's 2003 William Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement.
A recipient of the 1997 National Medal of Science, Hoffman is an
internationally recognized authority on the heaviest elements--those
much heavier than uranium and plutonium. She holds joint appointments
in Berkeley Labs Nuclear Science Division and as professor
of the graduate school in UC Berkeleys Chemistry Department.
Each year Sigma Xi awards the Procter Prize to a scientist who has
made an outstanding contribution to scientific research and has
demonstrated the ability to communicate this research to scientists
in other disciplines. The award includes a $5,000 grant to a young
colleague of the recipient's choice. More about the William Proctor
Prize can be found here.

City
Center Heat
Reduces Ice Storms
By Hannah Hoag
Fifty-five
years' worth of data shows that the pocket of warmth a
city generates - called an urban heat island can
stop rain freezing. "The heat island has both a seasonal
effect and a daily effect," says Stanley Changnon
of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who
led the study. Heat islands alter rainfall, snowfall and
thunderstorm intensity, so ice storms' variance is no
surprise, says Hashem Akbari of the Heat Island
Group at Berkeley Lab.
