Sign up for Red Cross CPR Saturday, March 15

The annual, free training and certification for CPR returns to the Berkeley campus on Saturday, March 15. Classes will be offered throughout the day at Hearst Gymnasium. Training in adult CPR, rescue breathing, and the Heimlich maneuver will last from 3 to 4 hours. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to sign up promptly for this popular event. TV Report On Safety of SUVs Features Lab Scientist Tom Wenzel

Tom Wenzel, a scientist in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, was featured this week in a report on automobile safety, in particular sports utility vehicles (SUVs), on KRON-TV. Wenzel was co-author of a study, "Are SUVs Really Safer than Cars? An Analysis of Risk by Vehicle Type and Model," which was the basis for the report filed by Channel 4's Karl Sonkin. Los Alamos Hearings
Scheduled in House

The House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations (House Committee on Energy and Commerce) next Wednesday will hold the first of two expected hearings on the recent business and administrative problems at Los Alamos National Laboratory. It will begin at 10 a.m. (Pacific time) in 2322 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, D.C. Among those expected to testify is Senior Vice President for University Affairs Bruce Darling, who is currently serving as Interim Vice President for Laboratory Management at the University of California. Groundbreaking for
UCLA Nano Institute

UCLA has broken ground for a new building that will house the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI). The CNSI is one of Gov. Davis’ four UC Institutes for Science and Innovation. CNSI will take a multidisciplinary approach to developing the information, biomedical, and manufacturing technologies necessary to meet the scientific and economic demands of the new century, with an emphasis on nanotechnology. and NSF Introduce
New Prize for Visual Media

The first ever Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge is now open to scientists and engineers who have used visual media to promote an understanding of their research results. The contest, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the AAAS journal Science, aims to promote the recognition of visual media that creatively enhances the understanding of technical information. Visual media submitted can include photographs, illustrations, animations, interactive media, video sequences, and computer graphics. Entries must be postmarked by May 31, 2003. Full story.

Hitchcock Lectures Feature Alexander Dalgarno

Distinguished astrophysicist Alexander Dalgarno will deliver the Hitchcock Lectures on Feb. 26 and 27. Renowned for his groundbreaking research in atomic, molecular, chemical, and dynamical processes in astrophysical and atmospheric environments, Delgarno will discuss "The Synthesis of Molecules in the Universe" next Wednesday, and "Comets and the Solar Wind" on Thursday. Both lectures begin at 4:10 p.m. in the International House auditorium. For more information, call 643-7413.
