Berkeley Lab’s recent federal technology transfer awards and its energy partnership with the City of Oakland are featured in the first issue of the University of California’s new “Lab Update” newsletter. Its purpose is to keep interested parties informed about activities at all three UC-managed labs.

Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank and University Auditor Patrick Reed have issued a joint statement for Laboratory employees, reaffirming their interest in receiving information about any suspected improprieties and explaining the avenues available for reporting such concerns. WASHINGTON - A powerful satellite has captured the best picture ever taken of the infant universe, an image so detailed that scientists said it answers some of the most important questions about the cosmos, including when it was born and how it will probably die.

The image, created from a year's worth of data collected by a NASA probe 1 million miles from Earth, has solved longstanding puzzles, such as what the universe looked like right after it was forged in the violent inferno of the Big Bang, when the first stars blinked on in the coalescing heavens and what kind of matter makes up the expanding universe that exists today.
